Frankly, studying for a spelling bee as vast as the Classmate Spell Bee is very hard. What I suggest is to go though previous editions of the Bee to really understand the various categories of words that typically appear on it. It is worthwhile to keep a tab on the websites of dictionaries like Oxford and Merriam-Webster’s, as most of them have ‘Words of the Day’ as well as lists of popular words that often come handy. The most foolproof method to score well is to read good, engaging literature, and to keep a sharp eye out for new words. There are various books that are useful for etymology, but the skill of spotting patterns in words is something that is only acquired with practice. It is certainly difficult to remember each and every word you’ve seen, but make an attempt to use at least one new word in conversation every day. What I like to do is to watch reruns of popular bees like the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Besides astounding you with words from the very depths of language, watching these videos is really good motivation to practise harder. Do not fall into the trap of merely memorising the spellings of words – a competition like this is meant to broaden your horizons of English!

The golden rule for preparation for a spell-bee is READING. Grab whatever you can read - an article, an encyclopaedia or perhaps a novel.

Secondly, scour the dictionary whenever you can. You can find many more words on the internet by specifically searching for difficult spellings or words on a particular topic.

Thirdly, try to understand the word's spelling not by memorising it, but by understanding its etymology. By understanding the roots of say Greek or Latin, you will be able to spell various words that you are not even aware of.

Lastly, and this may be the most important of all, have immense confidence on yourself. Remember, you are doing something that you're passionate about. So keep all the distractions aside, and do not forget to have fun and relish the experience amidst all the preparations!!
